The mission of the YMPG is to engage the next generation of geotechnical engineers in the ISSMGE. This is accomplished through mobilising students and younger members from across the world to share knowledge and ideas, to connect with leaders in the field, and to create opportunities for the international geotechnical community.

The YMPG includes 19 members from 6 regions (3 from each region) who were nominated by the regional Vice Presidents of ISSMGE and a Chair, appointed by the Board. In addition to the full members, the YMPG also has many more corresponding members from around the world. Corresponding members are kept informed of the work and progress of the YMPG, but are not allowed to vote on any initiatives. While the YMPG can only have 19 full members, the number of corresponding members is unlimited. The YMPG was first initiated by Prof. Jean-Louis Briaud during his presidency and has been continued by President Roger Frank.
